Wedding Photography in Vienna: What Does It Actually Feel Like To Celebrate Your Destination Wedding in The Capital City of Austria?

Vienna is one of those cities that is naturally and effortlessly beautiful. The atmosphere is just different here: more elevated and understated. The streets are quiet in the way that old cities are quiet. You notice details you normally wouldn’t. Everywhere you look, it feels like art.

There’s something about Vienna that feels like it was made for the kind of wedding photography I do: It’s a city that rewards presence. It has a quietness that invites you to be present. To notice the light, the details, the small moments between the big ones. That’s the same quality I bring to a wedding day: I’m not here to directevery second but to capture what is real, to observe, to stay close, and to let things unfold.

As a wedding photographer in Vienna, I like to photograph weddings on both: Digital and Film. Because I want to preserve every gesture, every moment and even the quiet ones in between, while adding warmth and intimacy with film that digital alone can’t quite replicate. In this combination, your wedding in Vienna unfolds in a gallery that feels complete: Images that reflect the day and how it felt, while carrying personality and character in equal measure.

5 Locations For Your Wedding Portraits in Vienna and When I'd Actually Recommend Them

Location 1: Belvedere Gardens

Best for: Couples who want something that reads as unmistakably Vienna. Elegant, timeless, with scale.

What makes it work: The formal garden geometry creates natural framing. You don’t have to pose much: This unique space speaks for itself. The reflecting pool in front of the Upper Belvedere is exceptional in calm weather.

When: Late afternoon in spring or summer. The gardens face south-west, which means the light becomes very usable around 5–7pm.

Practical reality: Commercial photography requires a permit. Book in advance, especially in high season. The gardens open early. Which is worth knowing if you want to shoot in the golden hour or before crowds arrive.

Location 2: Volksgarten with the Theseus Temple

Best for: Couples who want something romantic and soft. Especially if the bride’s dress has structure that benefits from a contrast with organic texture.

What makes it work: The rose garden is genuinely spectacular when it’s in bloom: Dense, layered, fragrant. For couples who want softness and colour without leaving the first district, it’s really hard to beat.

When: May–June for the roses. Outside of that window, the park is beautiful and I would focus on the Theseus Temple rather than the flowers.

Practical reality: It’s central and popular but surprisingly not that crowded on workdays. For weekends I reccomend early mornings (before 9am) or late evenings. That time frame gives you less crowds. The Temple of Theseus in the background adds a classical element which I really like.

Location 3: Burggarten with Hofburg

Best for: Couples who want maximum variety without covering half the city. The Burggarten gives you open lawns, grand staircases, ornate glasshouses, a classical terrace and the white Hofburg facade — all within a few minutes’ walk of each other. If you want a diverse gallery with completely different backdrops but don’t want to spend the whole afternoon travelling between locations, this is the most efficient and beautiful choice in Vienna.

What makes it work: The Burggarten is larger than it looks from the outside and beautifully maintained — which means you get genuine variety within a single location. A wide open lawn for airy frames. The iconic glasshouse with its ornate ironwork. Long sweeping staircases made for portraits. An elegant terrace. And the clean white Hofburg facade rising behind it all. Half a dozen completely different backdrops without ever leaving the location.

When: Late afternoon for the best light through the trees. Spring and early summer when everything is immaculately green. Autumn works beautifully too — the warm tones add depth to the images without any effort.

Practical reality: The Burggarten is public, free to access and requires no permit. It sits right between the Ringstrasse and the Albertina, making it easy to combine with a short walk through the nearby streets. Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends.

Location 4: Side Streets and Courtyards in the City of Vienna

Best for: Every Couple! I highly reccommend taking the time for a little stroll. This is especially for couples with a strong interest in design: You can combine architecture, editorial and city vibes all in one.

What makes it work: these are the pictures nobody else is making in quite the same way. The beautiful streets and the old building entrances with their original tile floors and ironwork. This is Vienna as you actually experience it, not just the version that gets photographed a hundred times a day.

When: The best time would be on weekdays or in the morning, before the tourist flow begins. Or in the evening with softer light. But even midday it would be the best choice to do some nice couple portraits without a big audience.

Practical reality: The key is knowing which streets are worth walking. The good thing: I already scouted my favourite places for your wedding portraits.

Location 5: Vienna City Hall

Best for: Couples who want something that reads as unmistakably Vienna without reaching for the obvious. Less expected than the Belvedere, less formal than Schönbrunn but just as impressive.

What makes it work: The Rathaus is one of those buildings that genuinely stops you. Neo-Gothic on an imperial scale, dark Viennese sandstone and a central spire. It’s one of the most architecturally striking buildings in the city. The Rathausplatz in front gives you great space and many possibilities for different perspectives. And the streets nearby are also really beautiful.

When: Late afternoon until early evening. That’s when the facade catches the low light and the square is at its quietest.

Practical reality: The square is fully accessible. No permits required for a „moving“ portrait session on your wedding day in Vienna.

FAQs – Wedding Photography Vienna

When selecting a wedding photographer for Vienna, start with the portfolio: Does their style actually feel like you? Look for a photographer with real experience shooting weddings. Someone who knows the locations, the light and how to handle an unpredictable day. Then get on a call. Chemistry matters as much as aesthetics. A good wedding photographer will ask the right questions and shape an offer around your plans, not hand you a fixed package.

You send an inquiry, we schedule a video call to talk through your vision and how I work. I genuinely look forward to that call. Because I want to get to know you and hear your story. What matters to you, what you’re nervous about, what you hope to feel when you open your wedding gallery for the first time. After that you’ll receive a personalised proposal. When you’re ready to move forward, a small deposit secures your date and I am all yours.

The best time is now. Most couples reach out around 9–18 months before their date. As I take on only a small number of weddings each year, the earlier you inquire, the better. Vienna is a popular destination, particularly for international couples, and dates in the main season fill early. For autumn and winter weddings, 6–9 months is usually fine.

Yes. Both locations require an official permit for commercial photography — which includes wedding galleries delivered to clients. The permit process takes time and involves a fee.

A typical wedding photographer Vienna package includes full-day coverage, from the bride and groom getting ready to the first dances. Packages should also include high-resolution edited images, travel costs and an online gallery. There are also customizable options, like video-coverage, pre-dinner-coverage, engagement sessions, second shooters and wedding albums.

Yes. After your inquiry and a video call, you’ll receive a personalised proposal based on your plans, locations and the kind of documentary you’re looking for. No one-size-fits-all packages.

I’m a full-time wedding photographer specialised in weddings across Europe.

I offer full wedding coverage: From intimate celebrations in the countryside to multi-day wedding weekends with welcome drinks, pool parties and everything in between.

Yes, I offer a combination of digital and 35mm analogue film for your wedding coverage as well. Film is particularly beautiful in Vienna’s light. The warmth it adds to interiors and portraits is something digital alone can’t replicate. I highly reccommend doing both.

Absolutely! I photograph weddings all across Europe. If you’re planning a celebration somewhere else and feel drawn to my work, I’d love to hear about it.

Yes, please. An hour together before the wedding day gives you a chance to get comfortable with how I work. And on your  wedding day you already know what to expect from me. You’ll be more relaxed in front of the camera and we can capture some beautiful city vibes. Vienna has excellent locations for a couples session.

For larger weddings, or whenever it makes sense for the shape of your day, I recommend adding a second photographer from my trusted team. Whether that’s the right call for your wedding is something we’ll figure out together on our call.

I am fluently in both English and German. For international couples planning a Vienna wedding, that means there’s no communication gap.

Honest Words from Former Clients

“Choosing Kim was one of the best decisions we made. She took so much time to understand us and our plans, and on the day she captured emotions we didn’t even realise she had seen. We love that she included our guests, the venue and all the little details as part of the story too. The pictures she captured for us is something we’ll cherish forever.”

– Elise & Tim

“Every moment feels genuine. The photos are timeless and natural, telling our story exactly as we lived it. The gallery reflects the entire day and we especially love the candid portraits of our guests. How could you be in so many places at once? Somehow you captured everything!”

– Verena & Thomas

“We’re so incredibly grateful we had Kim as our wedding photographer. The images are beautiful, natural and full of emotion, and somehow she was always there without ever being ‘in the way’. From first email to final gallery everything felt organised, calm and very professional, which gave us so much peace of mind. We honestly couldn’t have wished for a better experience.”

– Emma & Lucas

“Kim photographed our wedding day with so much sensitivity and professionalism. Every image feels genuine and full of joy. She didn’t only focus on us as a couple, but also on our families and guests, which makes the gallery feel like a complete story rather than a series of posed photos. We recommend her without hesitation.”

– Isabel & James

“Our gallery feels timeless and natural, as if Kim bottled the mood of the entire day. We’ll treasure these photos forever.”
